The United Nations General Assembly unanimously elected Antonio Guterres as secretary-general for a second term on Friday. His new five-year term begins on January 1, 2022. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message, wherein he lauded the UN for the universal, representative and authoritative international role it plays in international affairs. The 72-year-old Portuguese succeeded Ban Ki-moon of South Korea in January 2017, just weeks before Donald Trump became president of the United States. He has faced many challenges in his first term, including trying to end multiple wars and dealing with humanitarian crises in Syria and Yemen. Guterres also faced surging nationalism, an emergency in Myanmar and the global pandemic and its subsequent vaccination campaign. As many of these issues still remain, what can the UN do to have a bigger impact?
