January 11 marks 20 years since the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison opened. Set up on a U.S. naval base in Cuba during the so-called “War on Terror” in 2002, it has become a byword for illegal detention and torture. UN human rights experts have branded it “a stain on the U.S. Government’s commitment to the rule of law.” What does Guantanamo’s existence tell the world, especially when the U.S. projects itself as the guardian of human rights? Shouldn’t the U.S. address its own human rights abuses first by closing it down as soon as possible?
