Youth climate activists from around the world announced Monday that they will be back on the streets for a global climate protest this coming Friday – two days before the federal elections in Germany.
“The climate crisis has not disappeared,” Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg said at a joint virtual news conference with environmental activists from Uganda, South Korea, South Africa and Germany.
“It’s the opposite. It’s even more urgent now than it was before,” she added.
Under the hashtag ‘#uproot the system’, activists in different parts of the world will take to the streets to underline their demands.
Vanessa Nakate from Uganda said climate change had brought devastation to parts of Africa, including drought and flooding.
“That left nothing behind for the people, nothing except for pain, agony, suffering, starvation and death, so this is why we will be striking,” she said.
German activist Luisa Neubauer said it would be a “very special climate strike” for Germany, given its proximity to the election.
She described it as a “very strong signal” to voters.Bloomberg Quicktake: Now YouTube Channel
