Daily Mail published this video item, entitled “Grant Shapps outlines easing of restrictions for EU lorry drivers” – below is their description.
Truckers from Europe can only do two deliveries per week in Britain – but this morning the Government revealed the cap would be axed so they can make unlimited stops in the coming weeks. The Road Haulage Association has said their members are ‘gobsmacked and appalled’, claiming the ‘ridiculous’ plan gives EU companies carte blanche to undercut their UK rivals. Environment Secretary George Eustice has said that the changes will bring ‘significant additional capacity’ in the run up to the busy festive period – but the decision is likely to further infuriate union bosses threatening to co-ordinate lorry strikes amid rows over pay and conditions. With Boris Johnson battling to keep food and gifts on the shelves this Christmas due to a plethora of crises, Mr Eustice told the BBC that the changes would help Britain’s ‘HGV fleet because some of those EU fleets will be able to do more jobs’. It is understood the changes will come into force ‘towards the end of this year for up to six months’ – meaning that the extra capacity will be used to keep supermarkets and shops stocked close to Christmas. The lorries could also ease pressure at the UK’s creaking ports including Felixstowe.
