The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay held its graduation ceremony in virtual reality, with students’ avatars receiving their certificates in a live-streamed celebration.
Akash Deo was one of them. He’s from Nepal and studied Energy Systems Engineering.
He said he had mixed feelings receiving the award from thousands of kilometers away. “And it also feels a little bit incomplete,” said Akash, “that we couldn’t meet our friends and our professors, physically take pictures together and like to wave our hats.”
Students were given an app. “We logged in and then we played our avatar receiving the award,” explained Akash. His mom asked if he dressed up for it. “It seems very real to her.”
IIT also designed the whole campus in a virtual world. “If I come near to you, then your conference call and my conference call will appear in the screen and we can talk,” said Akash.
Akash thinks it’s the best compensation he got from IIT Bombay.
“My mom also believes that it is perfectly looking like me.”
