Around midnight on Friday the Government announced that anyone who had been in India over the past fortnight, including Australian citizens, could face up to five years’ jail if they re-entered the country. The extraordinary intervention comes as India enters what can only be described as a catastrophic stage of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government’s move has outraged many who can’t believe the country appears to be abandoning its own citizens and once again raised questions about the capacity of the quarantine system.
