Kate French put in a superb performance in the run and shoot to take an emphatic Olympic gold in the modern pentathlon and add to a long line of success for British women in the event.

French, fifth in Rio five years ago but a big pre-Tokyo British medal hope after winning World Cup Final gold earlier this year, stylishly catapulted herself from fifth before the final discipline onto the top step of the podium.

She was already up a place after the first laser shooting round and by the end of the opening lap she had overtaken all her rivals for a lead she would not relinquish, missing just two of her 22 shots with the laser gun.
