Global National: Sept. 17, 2022 | King Charles III’s surprise visit to those waiting to pay respects

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: Sept. 17, 2022 | King Charles III’s surprise visit to those waiting to pay respects” – below is their description.

Tonight in London, the queen’s eight grandchildren walked together in unison to stand vigil in Westminster Hall. They stood silently around the queen’s coffin for 15 minutes. An extraordinary sight for people who had waited hours to pay their respects. In just under 48 hours the public viewing will end as final funeral preparations get underway at Westminster Abbey. It has been a cold couple of nights in London, especially for tens of thousands of people waiting for hours in long lines to spend mere moments at the queen’s coffin. As Crystal Goomansingh reports, that wait really paid off for some today who were treated to a surprise appearance of the new King.

The prime minister along with a who’s who delegation of Canadian politicians and other delegates are now in London. And like many, they’re reflecting on their relationship with Queen Elizabeth II. Global’s Abigail Bimman is travelling with the Canadian delegation.

The succession of King Charles III began as soon as his mother, Queen Elizabeth, passed. But the task of changing and updating everything will be monumental. From images of the queen on flags, stationery, stamps, and currency to legal mentions of Her Majesty. As Anne Gaviola reports, the work has just begun.

If you thought air travel this summer was frustrating, you might want to buckle up. Experts say we could see even more problems through this coming this holiday season. Compared to last year, average fares are up 40 per cent during peak travel times. Jennifer Johnson reports.

During her reign, the queen was head of state for as many as 32 countries, but at the time of her death, just 14 remained outside the U.K. And in those countries, the succession of King Charles III has prompted a royal re-think with a growing number asking if the time is right to abolish the monarchy. Jeff Semple reports.

The queen made 22 visits to Canada, but there was also another – in 1951, then Princess Elizabeth toured the country. She and her husband – the Duke of Edinburgh – visited all 10 provinces. It was a trip that was supposed to last two weeks but ballooned to five weeks. As Mike Armstrong reports, just three weeks later, the princess became a queen.
