Global National: Oct. 1, 2022 | Worldwide solidarity after Mahsa Amini’s death in Iran

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: Oct. 1, 2022 | Worldwide solidarity after Mahsa Amini’s death in Iran” – below is their description.

From Tehran to Toronto, from Vancouver to Vienna, as many as 150 cities worldwide became a sea of solidarity for Iranian women after weeks of deadly nationwide protests there, sparked by the death of a 22 year-old woman. Mahsa Amini died after being arrested by the so-called morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab too loosely. There has been outrage like this several times over the past 40 years, but protesters hope this time is different. Tom Vernon has more.

In the U.S., Hurricane Ian has been downgraded but the death toll is rising there as it makes its way across the Carolinas. The search for survivors intensifies among the ruins of Florida’s flooded homes. Officials are assessing the damage of what’s being called one of the strongest and costliest hurricanes to hit the U.S. As Jennifer Johnson reports, it’s pushing its way further north.

Just as he did in Crimea eight years ago, Vladimir Putin is seeking to redraw the map of Ukraine behind the barrel of a gun. Meanwhile, Putin’s move to conscript hundreds of thousands of soldiers has prompted an exodus at Russia’s borders with thousands of would-be recruits desperately fleeing. “The West Block” host Mercedes Stephenson speaks with Bill Browder, head of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign and one of Putin’s fiercest critics.

Canada’s healthcare system has been making headlines for months now. You’ve likely heard about long emergency waits, front-line staff at their wits-end due to poor working conditions, and patients suffering unnecessarily. Maybe you’ve experienced this first-hand. While federal and provincial politicians say fixing this is a priority, as Jamie Mauracher reports, there are no immediate plans for a fix.

The pandemic led many people to reassess their priorities in life, especially when it comes to starting a family. Fertility clinics and sperm banks have seen an increase in clients, along with online services to help platonic co-parents among aspiring moms and dads. As Sophie Lui found out for The New Reality, the face of the family dynamic is changing, helping people conceive and raise children without the expectations or delays of romance or marriage.

A piece of advice that was widely ignored a century ago is now getting the recognition it deserves. One hundred years ago an Ontario doctor blew the whistle about atrocities of residential schools calling them “a national crime.” Now, he’s being honoured at the Ottawa publishing house that released his work. Abigail Bimman reports.

Iran, also called Persia, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. Its central location in Eurasia and proximity to the Strait of Hormuz give it significant geostrategic importance. Tehran is the capital and largest city.

Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, beginning with the formation of the Elamite kingdoms in the fourth millennium BC. The Iranian Revolution established the current Islamic Republic in 1979.

Iran’s political system combines elements of a presidential democracy and an Islamic theocracy. Iran is a founding member of the UN, ECO, OIC, and OPEC. It is a major regional and middle power and has large reserves of fossil fuels — including the world’s largest natural gas supply and the third largest proven oil reserves.

The country’s rich cultural legacy is reflected in part by its 22 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Historically a multi-ethnic country, Iran remains a pluralistic society comprising numerous ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups, the largest being Persians, Azeris, Kurds, Mazandaranis and Lurs.
