Global National: Nov. 25, 2020 | Ontario receives scathing pandemic response report

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: Nov. 25, 2020 | Ontario receives scathing pandemic response report” – below is their description.

The longer this pandemic goes on, the more it’s clear politics is playing a role in the response, especially in Alberta and Ontario. In a scathing assessment of the job Premier Doug Ford and his team have done in Ontario, the auditor general says poor emergency preparedness, inadequate lab capacity and a disorganized public health system meant Ontario was slower and more reactive to COVID-19 than other provinces. Ford has always claimed he has listened to the experts and on Wednesday he pushed back against that auditor general’s report. Mike Drolet reports. In Alberta, where COVID-19 has been spreading virtually unchecked, the premier says civil liberties have to be protected. While Jason Kenney calls his approach “balanced,” others have less charitable words to describe his leadership and say what he’s doing will lead to more deaths, not fewer. Heather Yourex-West reports. The approach in Nova Scotia couldn’t be more different from Alberta; 16 more COVID-19 cases were reported there today and the premier decided this week to take tough action. Strict new limits are being imposed on people’s lives and the premier has told Nova Scotian’s to stay home over Christmas. Ross Lord reports. British Columbia’s COVID-19 numbers keep shattering records. Yesterday almost 1,000 new cases were reported and 284 people were hospitalized with the virus. Among the public health orders, masks are now mandatory at all indoor public spaces. But as Robin Gill reports, tougher targeted restrictions might be needed where numbers are spiking. The former head of the Canadian Armed Forces has been given a new mission. Retired Gen. Rick Hillier will oversee COVID-19 distribution in Ontario. Our Ottawa bureau chief Mercedes Stephenson spoke with Hillier today and asked about his new role and return to public life. A company older than Canada itself is facing an uncertain future. Hudson’s Bay, like so many other retailers has been struggling during this pandemic. It is so bad the company has stopped paying rent on several of its properties. As Eric Sorensen explains, this year more than ever holiday shopping will be crucial to its survival. There has been so much loss in 2020 and tonight we have the story of a Canadian hockey player who has passed away. Frederick “Fred” Sasakamoose’s story was an important one – he was a trailblazer who opened doors for generations that followed. Mike Armstrong has more.
