Global National: May 9, 2021 | Alberta government faces backlash ahead of tougher pandemic measures

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: May 9, 2021 | Alberta government faces backlash ahead of tougher pandemic measures” – below is their description.

In Alberta, tougher pandemic restrictions on gatherings and businesses go into effect on Monday, as the province battles Canada’s biggest surge of COVID-19. But as Breanna Karstens-Smith reports, Alberta is also battling some of the staunchest opposition to its public health measures aimed at halting the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on world leaders to temporarily back dropping vaccine patent protections, in order to boost global supply. So, why is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reluctant to give Canada’s opinion on it? David Akin explains the international support and skepticism over the strategy.

In the United States, COVID-19 vaccination rates are on a worrying decline, dropping twenty percent in the last week alone. As Jennifer Johnson reports, as more Americans opt out of getting a shot, it’s causing a huge obstacle for the new Biden Administration to reach herd immunity by July.

Summer is fast approaching, but as Canada’s grapples with this third wave of COVID-19, there are still doubts whether summer camps will be back in operation for the upcoming season. As Ross Lord reports, children and parents are hopeful, but aren’t so sure.

Plus, a Belgian farmer is causing more laughter than anger, after he accidentally moved France’s border, making Belgium a little bit bigger. As Redmond Shannon explains, the land grab is causing quite a stir, and involves a tractor, a rock, and the legacy of Napoleon.
