As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the eastern city of Sievierodonestk may be days away from falling to Russian forces, as the Luhansk province’s last Ukrainian stronghold is bombarded with artillery while many civilians remain trapped. As Crystal Goomansingh reports, the assault echoes the same tactics used to devastate the city of Mariupol.

On the second day of the public hearings into the Jan. 6th siege on the U.S. Capitol, more evidence was presented that former president Donald Trump knew he lost the election, but was trying to orchestrate an attempted coup. Jennifer Johnson reports on the new testimony Trump refused to acknowledge his inner circle’s warnings about making false claims about election fraud, and how that fueled rioters.

The United Kingdom is moving ahead with its controversial plan to fly asylum seekers to Rwanda, saying this will discourage human smuggling and illegal migrants from making the dangerous trek across the English Channel. As Redmond Shannon explains, critics say this will just put migrants in further danger.

And Blake Lemoine, a senior software engineer with Google, is on paid leave after going public with claims the tech giant’s artificial intelligence has consciousness and a soul. Mike Drolet looks at Lemoine’s conversation with the chatbot Language Model for Dialogue Applications, or LaMDA, and whether humans are ready for another form of intelligence beyond our own.
