Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: July 28, 2021 | Residential school survivor recounts “most awful years of my life”” – below is their description.

Residential school survivor Mary Courchene says her 10 years at Manitoba’s Fort Alexander Residential School in Sagkeeng First Nation were the worst of her life. The school is at the centre of a decade-long RCMP investigation into alleged child abuse by teachers and staff, which was recently made public. Brittany Greenslade explains why Courchene is speaking out about her traumatic experience now.

News of the investigation of one former residential school has prompted calls for a Canada-wide investigation of the same kind. An estimated 5,000 people are believed to have abused residential school children, but fewer than 50 have been held accountable for their crimes. Mike Le Couteur reports on the calls for justice from Indigenous leaders across the country.

Rising cases of COVID-19 in Alberta and British Columbia are fuelling concerns over a fourth pandemic wave. Heather Yourex-West reports on the areas where the virus is spreading, who’s getting sick and how it could impact recently loosened restrictions.

The reputation of the Montreal Canadiens is at stake after the team selected 18-year-old Logan Mailloux, a known sex offender, in the NHL draft. Mike Armstrong reports on why the Habs say they picked Mailloux, how they’re responding to the backlash and whether it’s enough to win back fans.

Simone Biles, the most decorated U.S. women’s gymnast in history, has withdrawn from two events at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. As Crystal Goomansingh explains, she’s not the only elite athlete who’s showing strength through self care.
