Tonight’s top story: Alberta’s premier introduced tougher public health restrictions after weeks of intense pressure to do more. Alberta has the highest active number of cases in the country and community spread is at a worrying level. Premier Kenney said he’d only take tough action as a last resort. It seems Alberta has now reached that point. Based on the current trajectory there could be 4,000 new cases per day by Christmas. Heather Yourex-West reports.
A 90-year-old woman in the U.K. has become the first person in the world to receive a clinically approved coronavirus vaccine. It is welcome news not just in the U.K., but around the world. So much hope in returning to normal life resting in these tiny vials. It’s been just 332 days since the first death was reported in China and its since invaded every other country on Earth, infecting more than 67 million people and killing more than 1.5 million people. In the U.K. the vaccine did not go to residents in care homes, but was given to those aged 80 and over and who were already in hospital along with nursing home workers and some health care staff. Crystal Goomansingh reports on what’s been dubbed V-Day in the U.K.
Health Canada is expected to approve the first COVID-19 vaccines later this week. Working out the delivery plan is like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle involving the federal government, the provinces, and the manufacturers. Mike Drolet looks at how Canada’s vaccine rollout is coming together.
