Global National: Dec. 4, 2022 | “Tridemic” causing new health-care impacts across Canada

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: Dec. 4, 2022 | “Tridemic” causing new health-care impacts across Canada” – below is their description.

On this episode of Global National: This cold and flu season has come in with a punch, and the combination of medicine shortages and overwhelmed hospitals has led to parents and medical professionals taking on more than they could handle. In Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., cases of the flu are higher than they’ve been in decades. But is our immunity compromised, is it a lack of vaccines or a combination of both? Ross Lord gets some answers in tonight’s top story.

In the U.S., there’s been a major surge in cases and hospitalizations for the flu and COVID-19 after the Thanksgiving holiday. Flu hospitalizations haven’t been this high, this early in the season, in over a decade. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has tracked about 9-million cases of the flu and 4,500 deaths. And COVID-19 cases are spiking too. As Jennifer Johnson reports, hospitals across the country are struggling to keep up.

In consumer news, record-high inflation is hitting many Canadians hard. It’s especially making a difference at a time of the year when people spend — and give — money. Marney Blunt has more on how many families will juggle rising costs with the expenses of the holiday season.

Plus, thousands of delegates are gathering in Montreal as the United Nations’ (UN) COP 15 Summit starts on Wednesday. With the UN reporting that the earth is experiencing its largest loss of life since the dinosaurs, the event to examine ways to preserve biodiversity and protect global ecosystems couldn’t come at a more crucial time. As Amanda Jelowicki tells us, what the delegates will agree to is still being negotiated.

In Saskatchewan, resident Dwayne Belcourt is asking health officials to re-consider their rules for organ and tissue donations after his late husband Merril Donkin’s tissues were disqualified. “They basically asked me if [Donkin] had intimate relations with a man in the last five years,” Belcourt explained. Kabi Moulitharan has the story.

And finally, Dr. Anthony Fauci, U.S. President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, spoke with Global News’ Washington Bureau Chief Jackson Proskow, as he prepared to step down after more than five decades of service in the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

In This Story: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is best known as a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November every year, usually through feasting, parades and travel to see family and friends, though celebrations were scaled back during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

The roots of the modern celebration lie in settlers celebrating their arrival in the Americas in the early 1600’s. It has been a public holiday since 1941 due to federal legislation, an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers of the United States.

Traditionally, Thanksgiving has been a celebration of the blessings of the year, including the harvest. What Americans call the “Holiday Season” generally begins with Thanksgiving. The first day after Thanksgiving Day—Black Friday—marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.
