Global National: August 1, 2021 | Canada’s Olympic medal count grows as Penny Oleksiak makes history

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: August 1, 2021 | Canada’s Olympic medal count grows as Penny Oleksiak makes history” – below is their description.

On this episode of Global National: Canada’s medal count grows at the Tokyo Olympics, as swimmer Penny Oleksiak makes history, earning her seventh career Olympic medal as the country’s most decorated Olympian. Crystal Goomansingh looks at her achievement and what it means for her friends and family.

Also, as parts of Canada further ease pandemic measures, the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant continues to spread in greater numbers, targeting the country’s unvaccinated. As Sarah Komadina reports, it’s sparking concerns that loosening protocols too fast will result in harder-hitting fourth wave. And Caryn Lieberman looks at the serious concerns about how it will hit Canada’s many unvaccinated children.

Heath officials in the United States are also desperate to change the minds of millions of Americans who are still refusing a COVID-19 vaccine, as the Delta variant spreads across the country. Florida has become the nation’s biggest hotspot as it sees record high case counts. But as Jennifer Johnson reports, that doesn’t seem to concern the state’s governor.

Plus, Myanmar continues to be in turmoil six months after its military junta seized control in a coup. Protesters continue to demand the release of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. But as Redmond Shannon explains, activists say the regime is now weaponizing the COVID-19 crisis against its own people.

And with talks of a looming federal election later in the fall, and a Nova Scotia election already underway, it’s a busy summer in Canadian politics. Yet, despite some milestones over the years, there remains few Black voices represented in the halls of government. Ross Lord looks at the efforts to bolster Black representation.
