Global National: Aug. 5, 2022 | More voices in Canadian health care cry out for help

Global News published this video item, entitled “Global National: Aug. 5, 2022 | More voices in Canadian health care cry out for help” – below is their description.

On this episode of Global National: Every day, there’s an increase in voices in Canada’s health-care system crying out for help as staffing shortages choke the system. Emergency room doctors and nurses are increasingly feeling the strain. As Ross Lord reports, Ontario’s health-care unions are realizing a five-point plan to address the crisis in their province.

Following the U.S. move in declaring the spread of monkeypox a public health emergency, Canada is being urged to do the same. But as Jamie Mauracher reports, there are also concerns about vaccine supply.

Plus, the Canadian federal government plans to fast-track a ban on the import of handguns into the country – without the approval of Parliament. Mercedes Stephenson explains how the feds are using a regulatory measure that comes into effect in just two weeks to do so.

The jury is now deliberating in the trial of Dutch man Aydin Coban, who is accused of harassing and extorting late B.C. teenager Amanda Todd. Coban pleaded not guilty to extortion, harassment, communication with a young person to commit a sexual offence and possession and distribution of child pornography at the start of the trial two months ago. Rumina Daya has that story.

Canada currently has more than one million job vacancies and not enough workers to fill them. As Anne Gaviola reports, labour experts say prolonged staffing shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic are making the case for more job automation.

And it doesn’t really look like cat food, but to be clear, it’s not – though it may remind you of your feline’s favourite dish. Fancy Feast cat food is opening a cat food-inspired restaurant for only two nights in New York City. Abigail Bimman tells us how Gatto Bianco is meant to help cat owners understand how their cats experience food.
