A day after author Salman Rushdie was brutally attacked onstage in upstate New York, investigators have charged the suspect with attempted murder. For decades, the polarizing figure lived under assassination threats. But tonight, as he remains in the hospital in serious condition, police are still searching for a motive. As Mike Drolet reports in our top story tonight, global reactions to the shocking attack have been mixed, but at least one Canadian politician says this will only strengthen Rushdie’s resolve.

A lawyer for former U.S. President Donald Trump signed a statement in June that all classified files at his Florida estate had been returned. But this week, over 25 boxes of documents — many top secret — were seized by the FBI, indicating that the Trump team was less than forthcoming about the sensitive material. Tonight, Americans are wondering if Trump will face any consequences, including criminal charges. Jennifer Johnson has the latest.

In less than a week, Canada’s largest annual fair, the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), will re-open its gates for the first time in two years, after a lengthy pandemic shutdown. But a labour dispute between the Technical Standards and Safety Authority and its inspectors has led to questions about ride safety ahead of the two-week event in Toronto. Morganne Campbell has more.

The French are dealing with a mustard shortage, and Canada is playing a key role. With 80 per cent of mustard seeds coming from Canada, supermarket shelves in France have been empty when it comes to the Dijon mustard aisle — and the shortage is thanks to a heat wave last year in the North American country.
