Sky News published this video item, entitled “Ghost pupils: Why are children missing school?” – below is their description.
As schools go back after the summer there’s a warning, the problem of so-called ‘ghost children’ – who’ve struggled to return to regular lessons since the pandemic – is getting worse.
During the last academic year 124,000 pupils missed more than half of their classes – and since the start of the pandemic, almost 100,000 have disappeared from school rolls. Now the former children’s commissioner Anne Longfield warns the cost-of-living crisis is exacerbating the situation.
But in an exclusive interview with Sky News, education secretary James Cleverly says he’s introducing a series of measures to ensure more children are in school, such as targeted support and new guidance on fines for parents.
Our political correspondent Amanda Akass reports.
