Spargelzeit, or “asparagus time” in Germany happens around the spring, when the pale spears of white asparagus are ready for harvest.

Germans are often said to be obsessed with the white vegetable, consuming more of it than any other country.

During the season, East European workers come to Germany to work the fields, harvest, and sort the produce – but COVID has made their travel more difficult, and affected demand for the “white gold”.

Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker reports from Beelitz in Brandenburg, Germany.
