The mother of Ahmaud Arbery attended an event honoring her son in Atlanta Wednesday, where state lawmakers passed a resolution declaring Feb. 23 Ahmaud Arbery Day in Georgia.
Arbery’s mom, Wanda Cooper-Jones, said Wednesday at an event honoring her son in Atlanta that there’s been much progress since her son’s death. She cited the repeal of Georgia’s citizens arrest law and new hate crimes legislation in the state.
She announced that a foundation in her son’s name that is focused on raising awareness about the mental health of Black boys will provide scholarships to graduating seniors from Arbery’s high school.
A jury returned federal hate crime convictions against father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan on Tuesday, the day before the second anniversary of Arbery’s death.
The verdicts came three months after the same white men were convicted of murder in a Georgia state court.
Arbery was 25 years old when he was chased by pickup trucks and fatally shot in a subdivision outside Brunswick, Georgia, on Feb. 23, 2020.
