George Floyd’s family said the trial of the former police officer accused of killing the 46-year-old would serve as a “referendum on how far America has come” ahead of opening arguments in the trial in Minneapolis.

Mr Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, said he was hopeful that Derek Chauvin would be convicted of second-degree murder when the jury was showed the video of his brother’s last moments.

The bystander footage, which showed Mr Floyd, 46, being pinned to the ground by Mr Chauvin last May as he struggled to breathe, touched off a global protest movement against police brutality and racial injustice.
