    Since the murder of George Floyd, a fierce debate has taken place in the US over the teaching of American history – in particular their history involving race and slavery.

    Now a number of Republican states are looking to ban ways of teaching Black history that they say discriminates against white students.

    Sky News has been working with our colleagues at NBC News on the battle in the American classroom – their correspondent, Antonia Hylton has this special report.

    George Floyd was an African-American man who died on 25th May 2020 in Powderhorn, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, following police arrest. Video recording by a witness, showing Floyd repeating “Please”, “I can’t breathe”, and “Don’t kill me”, was widely circulated on social media platforms and broadcast by media. The incident led to widespread protests across the United States.
