George Floyd. His brutal killing under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer has officially been ruled a homicide. Anger at his death, and the countless others that came before him, has sparked the worst civil unrest America has experienced since the death of Martin Luther King.
But Floyd isn’t just a name. Floyd isn’t just a victim.
George Floyd was a man. He had a family. He was a father. He had a job. He used to be a rapper. ‘Big Floyd’, as he was known, appeared on records by DJ Screw. And just like everyone, Floyd had problems. When the coronavirus lockdown hit Minneapolis, he lost his job as a security guard at one of the city’s restaurants.
The rest, as blazing towns and cities across America will attest, is history.
