Global News published this video item, entitled “George Floyd death: Minneapolis reaches $27 million settlement with family” – below is their description.
The City of Minneapolis on Friday agreed to pay US$27 million to settle a lawsuit by the family of George Floyd over his death while in police custody last May, a case that sparked national protests over racial injustice and police brutality.
Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the family, said the agreement was the largest pre-trial settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit in U.S. history.
“It sends a message that the unjust taking of a Black life will no longer be written off as trivial, unimportant or unworthy of consequences,” Crump said Friday.
Several members of Floyd’s family joined Crump and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on stage at a news conference following the decision to award the settlement, with his brother Philonise Floyd saying he made a movement and “everybody is standing with us in solidarity.”
“This nation needs healing. Our family needs healing,” he said.
The trial of the former officer charged with Floyd’s death, Derek Chauvin, is underway with jury selection currently taking place.
