Hamas militants in Gaza fired a new barrage of rockets into Israel overnight.

A series of explosions also struck Gaza City, with the flash of the blasts – and the trail of the outgoing rockets – lighting up the night sky.

It followed a day of dramatic escalation of the conflict that included Israel bombing the home of a senior Hamas leader and destroying a tower block that housed international media organisations including The Associated Press.
