The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas faced an early test on Friday as clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli police following Friday prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound – the site that triggered the 11-day conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened “a new level of force” against Hamas should fighting break out again.

The 11-day war left more than 250 dead – the vast majority Palestinians – and brought widespread devastation to the already impoverished Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
