Gavin Williamson says schools will re-open in a ‘phased manner’

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has just confirmed that schools will reopen in a “phased” way, giving as much notice as possible.

He also told MPs he has asked the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) to set up a sub-group to examine how schools can reopen in a safe way.

“We recognise the idea of schools all returning on day one with the full complement of pupils is not practical,” he told MPs.

“Just a couple of weeks ago I commissioned Sage to set up a sub-group to look at the particular issues of opening schools, making sure that when schools are open it’s done in the best possible way with the very best scientific and medical advice.”

He also said he is “incredibly keen” to work on a long term national education service with the BBC, for children without access to computers.
