FRANCE 24 English published this video item, entitled “G7 vows enduring support for Ukraine: Russian sanctions ‘on the forefront of all the leaders minds'” – below is their description.
In a statement from the G7 summit in southern Germany, the Group of Seven most industrialised countries vowed on-going solidarity for Ukraine, ‘as long as it takes,’ in the face of Russian aggression. After speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for nearly two hours by video-link from Kyiv, G7 leaders issued a forceful message of solidarity with the embattled nation. For more analysis on the G7 Summit and its key objectives, FRANCE 24 is joined by Dr. Tristen Naylor, Diplomatic Solutions’ Managing Director and Lecturer of History and Politics at the University of Cambridge. “I think one of the key strategic objectives of the G7 leaders over the next day and a half is to try to drive a wedge between India and Russia, between the Indian prime minister and the Russian president, and try to bring him firmly into the Western camp. And as Western sanctions on Russia continue to intensify, the G7 is also seeking to cap the price of Russian oil. Dr. Naylor explains the challenges ahead: “Imposing caps on any sort of market, let alone the oil market, is something that is incredibly difficult to do, not least of all when there are still plenty of markets for Russian oil.”
