G7 rejects push by U.S. to refer to coronavirus as ‘Wuhan virus’

A German news magazine reports that the G-7 has rejected a push by the U.S. to include the phrase “Wuhan virus” in a joint statement. Der Spiegel reported that ministers drafted a statement after holding a video conference on the outbreak. But, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reportedly wanted the statement to refer to coronavirus as the “Wuhan virus.” It was reportedly taken out after being met with disapproval by other member countries. The WHO advises against naming infectious diseases after places over fears it could lead to stigma and prejudice.
