Tuesday night’s second French presidential TV debate, the first ever to include all 11 candidates, has drawn both criticism and praise from today’s French press.
While Le Figaro and Le Monde seized on the “chaos and confusion” of the debate, left-wing daily Liberation hailed the format as an exciting opportunity for the lesser-known fringe candidates. The televised contest inspired Le Parisien to draft up a winners table putting far-left hopeful Philippe Poutou in second place, just behind centrist frontrunner Emmanuel Macron. But it was Poutou’s biting criticism of Marine Le Pen that provided the night’s most memorable moments.
