‘We’ve held back from bringing Ukraine into NATO, I think that’s wise, as that would be a provocation greater than the Kremlin would be prepared to put up with.’

The remarks by General Dannatt in his Videos recorded in January and April of this year, before and after the Russian invasion of Ukraine seem very well balanced, exactly aware of the nature of Vladimir Putin, his consistent aims to roll back NATO to its 1989 borders and the nature of the war crimes committed (by April) in Bucha and Irpin. The weakness of the West has been apparent for some twelve or fifteen years, as The General makes very clear.
It does not seem at this stage of the conflict (late August), and following Russia’s levelling of Mariupol, its indiscriminate attacks on Schools, Hospitals, Civilian apartment blocks, Town Halls and other buildings used as places of refuge, that President Zelensky should have to enter into any kind of Peace negotiations with Putin, except on his terms -as agreed at the NATO summit in Munich earlier this summer. Thanks to really large support in weaponry from the USA, to every possible extent also from the UK and to some from France, mainly channelled through Poland, Vladimir Putin’s invading forces are taking a beating and are now on the back foot. Meanwhile NATO’s eastern boundaries are being steadily, if a bit slowly, strengthened with substantial extra Military Forces. There is still the large Variable as to whether the Russians may resort to using tactical nuclear weapons in the Ukraine or whether the big Nuclear Power Station in Zaporetzia, its perimeter shamelessly used by Russian Artillery, may blow, causing widespread nuclear fallout over much of Europe, including over Russia itself if carried there by the wind.
Nevertheless it does not seem unreasonable for the Western Powers to back the heroism of the elected Government of Ukraine and its people to the full until 100% of the Country is liberated. Putin is indeed an unreconstructed KGB Spy Colonel and a proven War Criminal who ideally should stand trial and be punished as such in the Hague. I have the feeling that a Soldier as distinguished as General Dannatt may be thinking something along these lines, more eloquently than this correspondent ever could by now but will leave my comments here; unsigned but authentic.
