Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says he would welcome President Donald Trump and other GOP officials to Florida for the Republican National Convention in August.
Trump is no longer planning to speak at the planned Republican convention in Charlotte, North Carolina after Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper said the full capacity convention Trump had demanded is very unlikely to happen in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Republican National Committee says it plans to hold some business activities in North Carolina if Cooper and other officials “allow more than 10 people in a room.”
Trump vowed Tuesday night on Twitter to deliver his speech outside North Carolina.
“I don’t like how some states have said, ‘Oh, we’re not going to have anyone ever in an arena until 2021,'” DeSantis said Wednesday. “How could you possibly know that that’s the case?”
He added that his approach to a full RNC convention would be “a default yes.”
“North Carolina approached it as saying, OK, it’s a default no,” said DeSantis, a Republican. “In my view, would be it should be a default yes. And then as we get closer, you can make determinations about how you do it.”
DeSantis spoke from Universal Studios CityWalk, where he announced the next phase of Florida’s plan to reopen and recover from the coronavirus outbreak.
He says the convention would be a great economic opportunity for Floridians.
Local businesses, especially those in the struggling hospitality industry, stand to benefit from a boom in economic activity.
“North Carolina may have missed its chance,” he said. “I think it would be good for us here in the state of Florida.”
The RNC and city of Charlotte signed a contract that went into effect in July 2018. Both sides are working to make sure the other holds up their end of the bargain.
Republican governors in Georgia and Tennessee have also called on Trump to move the convention to their states.
The RNC is scheduled to visit Nashville on Thursday.
