Firefighters battle wildfires in Spain amid European heatwave

Global News published this video item, entitled “Firefighters battle wildfires in Spain amid European heatwave” – below is their description.

Firefighters in Spain struggled to contain wildfires on Sunday amid an unusual heat wave in Western Europe for this time of year.

The worst damage in Spain has been in the northwest province of Zamora, where over 25,000 hectares of land have been consumed, according to regional authorities.

“We left with the fire right by our side. I was desperate. We didn’t know anything,” 36-year-old resident Javier Vara said.

Spanish authorities said that after three days of high temperatures, punishing winds and low humidity, some respite came with dropping temperatures on Sunday morning.

Authorities warned there was still a danger that an unfavourable shift in weather could revive the blaze that caused the evacuation of 18 villages.
