Finland, Sweden to apply for NATO membership

Finland announces its intention to seek NATO membership, hours before Sweden’s governing party backed a plan to join the trans-Atlantic alliance.

The decision comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Finland that joining NATO would be “a mistake”.

NATO’s foreign ministers are holding a meeting in Germany to discuss moves by Finland and Sweden to join the military alliance.
