Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is posing a major threat to global food supply chains. Ukraine and Russia are often called the “Breadbasket of Europe.” They are major global producers of wheat, barley and corn.
But the war has already impacted Ukrainian agriculture and has driven up some grain prices to record levels. Much of that produce gets exported to developing nations and there are concerns that the war will worsen already-high levels of poverty and hunger in those countries.
Redmond Shannon looks at the vulnerable countries relying on Ukrainian agriculture and the ripple effects going beyond Europe.
