Father of Parkland victim calls for better law enforcement training during US Senate hearing

Global News published this video item, entitled “Father of Parkland victim calls for better law enforcement training during US Senate hearing” – below is their description.

Members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee conducted a hearing titled “Protecting America’s Children from Gun Violence” on Wednesday in the wake of the recent mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where a gunman took the lives of 19 children and two teachers.

Among those testifying was Max Schachter, who lost his son Alex in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

“In Parkland, in just three minutes and fifty-one seconds, 24 people were shot and/or killed including my little boy Alex. And school resource officers are critical to being on-scene. In Florida, we are the only state in the country that mandated every K through 12 school, there has to be an armed security officer,” Schachter said.

Schachter compared the situation in Parkland to the one that just unfolded in Uvalde where officers waited nearly an hour before entering the school. “We had nine sheriff’s office deputies that waited outside,” he said. “Law enforcement needs to do better on the training.”
