The Commonwealth explosives factory at Maribyrnong opened its doors to the public in December 1960 to celebrate 50 years in the making of ammunition.

The huge Melbourne plant was thrown open to friends and relatives of staff. Visitors were taken from section to section of the sprawling plant in a bus, gaining insight into the intricate and dangerous work carried out at Maribyrnong.

Staff demonstrated the filling of 20mm shells, quality control processes as well as the application of detonators to shells – all carried out with strict safety measures in place.

This story aired on ABC television on 5 December 1960.
