Global News published this video item, entitled “Families of Indonesia’s sunken submarine crew pay tribute at sea” – below is their description.
Crying out their loved ones’ names as they scattered flower petals into the water, relatives of the 53 Indonesian navy crew members who died in a sunken submarine paid tribute in a ceremony at sea on Friday.
The German-built KRI Nanggala-402 was discovered broken into at least three parts at a depth of nearly 840 meters on April 25, four days after it lost contact while preparing to conduct a torpedo drill.
President Joko Widodo said the government will build houses for relatives of the crew “according to the mothers’ wishes.” He also said earlier this week that the government would increase the crew members’ military ranks and fund their children’s education.
Retrieval operations are still ongoing with help from international search teams, as authorities struggle to figure out how to lift the wreckage. Experts warn that it will be a daunting task to lift the submarine to the surface, requiring specialized salvage equipment.
