A reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic Mona Lisa painting has sold for 2.9 million euros at an online auction.

The ‘Hekking Mona Lisa’ was painted by an unknown artist about 100 years after the original entered the royal collection of Francois I.

It was named after Raymond Hekking, who bought it from an antique store in southern France in 1953.

He spent decades trying to convince people that his was the real Mona Lisa and the painting in the Louvre was a fake. He claimed the original had never been returned after a theft in the early 20th century.

Christie’s auction house said the painting fetched a record price for a Mona Lisa reproduction.
