UK transport secretary Grant Shapps announced Thursday that face coverings will be compulsory on public transport from 15 June.
Speaking at the daily coronavirus briefing, he said people should not wear surgical masks, as these were needed for clinical use.
Instead, travellers should use face coverings that can be easily made at home.
Very young children and people with breathing difficulties are exempt from the new rule.
Shapps also announced that the UK recorded 176 new deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 39,904.
