Zhongwei, a city in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, has been in a battle against the Tengger Desert since the 1950s. Back then, the distance between the desert and the city was around five kilometers. A breeze would bring dust and sand from the desert into residents’ homes.
