Explained: Does France’s far-right have a future?

Despite her loss in the French election, Marine Le Pen scored a record result for a far-right party with over one third of the vote.

“It feels a little bit like the world’s liberal intelligencia are wringing themselves to bits over Le Pen junior as much as they did with her father. The fact is, the things that ‘far right’ politicians and their parties say chime with large numbers of what we might call ‘ordinary people’.

Why do these ‘ordinary people’ feel that the far right offers them the best, or only viable choice? Maybe that’s the question which should be answered. Provide a better option. Don’t whinge and whine about how this option is a bad one.”
