Sub-Saharan Africa has seen a worrying rise in infections, with the World Health Organization calling on states to drastically increase testing. The International Red Cross says countries in the region are typically conducting only 8,000 tests per million people, whereas countries such as Britain have over 200,000 per million. Oxford Analytica’s senior Africa analyst Jason Robinson says while deaths officially tied to coronavirus remain relatively low, there are increased reports of mystery deaths, and huge numbers of deaths above normal in a given month.
