For more:
Resolving trade disputes is one of the core functions of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Its Appellate Body, known as the crown jewel of the WTO is a seven-member panel of experts charged with judging trade disputes, worth billions of dollars. But the body has been crippled since 2019 because of U.S. efforts to block the appointment of new members. In November 2020, the last remaining member of the Appellate Body ended her term, bringing the total number of experts to zero. Her name is Zhao Hong from China.
What has happened to the trade dispute mechanism? What’s been the impact on the international trade regime?
Guest: Zhao Hong, a former member of the WTO’s Appellate Body and the second Chinese woman to serve in this capacity.
