Public health was a hot topic at this year’s Two Sessions. Though the COVID-19 epidemic has been well under control in China, how to ward off outbreaks is still one of the top priorities in the near future. China’s top legislature is keen on laws to strengthen the legal safeguards for public health, according to a government work report. On the sidelines of the Two Sessions, Tian Wei caught up with Margaret Chan, former director-general of the World Health Organization, now a member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee. She is a straight talker. She minced no words about Hong Kong’s troubles, spending a good part of her life in the city. And, as a global health advocate, she handled the aftermath of SARS and then bird flu and Ebola. With new virus variants and a shortfall of vaccines, she said international cooperation is the only way.
