The European Parliament has awarded this year’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the democratic opposition in Belarus, which has faced a fierce crackdown by security forces loyal to longtime President Alexander Lukashenko. FRANCE 24 correspondent Gulliver Cragg says the Belarus opposition is a movement that surprised the world, especially after the scenes of police brutality in the days after the contested vote.
