FRANCE 24 English published this video item, entitled “EU-Poland tensions, Belarus migration, Covid-19 surge in Europe, Colin Powell’s legacy” – below is their description.
EU leaders have been holding a two-day summit in Brussels at which a spat with Poland over its rejection of the EU’s legal order was high on the agenda. This after the Constitutional Court in Warsaw ruled earlier this month that EU law applies only in specific, limited areas and that Polish law prevails in all others circumstances. Before the summit started, the French President Emmanuel Macron and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel both held one-on-one talks with the Polish Prime Minister. And as the summit got started on Thursday evening, the European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen once again warned Poland of consequences.
Divisions at the EU Summit were also evident on the topic of migration, which in the past has turned Europeans against each other notably when Germany opened its doors to asylum-seekers fleeing war in 2015.The thorny issue is once again high on the political agenda for the bloc as a result of a spike in arrivals of refugees and migrants, who have transited Belarus. Brussels blames Minsk for orchestrating this and pushing people into bloc, in other words “weaponising” migration or using “migration blackmail” in response to EU sanctions. The influx has led to some countries, like Lithuania, stepping up work on border fences. The week began with the news that the French Ambassador to Belarus had been ordered to leave the country.
