EU negotiator Michel Barnier says he is ‘disappointed’ after little progress was made in trade deal talks with the UK this week.
Mr Barnier said the trade talks were actually ‘going backwards’, warning that a deal is still unlikely to be made by the end of the year.
He added ‘We hear the British Government’s concern about maintaining its sovereignty and its regulatory autonomy and we respect that clearly.
‘But no international agreement was ever reached without the parties agreeing to common rules.’
UK negotiator David Frost said that the the EU was still insisting that the UK must accept continuity with EU state aid and fisheries policy, and that ‘this makes it unnecessarily difficult to make progress.’
