Several thousand people gathered at Place de Neuve in Geneva on Tuesday to show solidarity with U.S. protesters and denounce alleged police brutality in Switzerland.
The Geneva protest was organised by a group called Black Lives Matter Swiss.
Kelly Mapatano, a 24-year-old participant said it was “really important to be present to show that not only are we are supporting our African-Americans brothers and sisters, but also to say that we are much aware of police violence in Switzerland.”
Signs carried by protesters mentioned several names of Swiss people who died allegedly because of police violence.
One of them was Hervé Mandundu, a 27 year-old who was shot dead by the police in 2017. Another was 40-year-old Nigerian Mike Ben Peter who died in much the same circumstance as George Floyd in Lausanne in 2018.
Demonstrations have been sparked worldwide after the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis after being restrained by a white police officer on May 25.
